MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – The Miami-Dade detective is investigating the murder of a 24-year-old officer who works for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Transportation Security Service.
A gunman in a dark four-door Nissan killed Leshonte Jones on Monday at his Coral Bay Cove apartment in the Naranja neighborhood of southern Miami-Dade County.
“We are trying to find out what is the motive here,”; said detective Alvaro Zabaleta. “We are trying to figure out what caused this illogical violence.”
Jones’ three-year-old daughter was injured during the shooting at 25801 S.Dixie Highway, a Miami-Dade fire rescuer, took her to the Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, according to Zabaleta.She was in stable condition.
“I am deeply shocked and saddened by the illogical acts of violence that have left the young, lively officer from her family and away from us too quickly,” said government security director Daniel Ronan. The central TSA said in a statement.
Jones is returning home after a shift as a TSA officer at Miami International Airport.
“Words cannot accurately convey the huge loss we all feel right now,” Ronan said.
