Drinking cola or ‘weight loss’ lemonade is just as bad for you as full-sugar varieties, a major study suggests.

The researchers found that people who consumed artificially sweetened or sweetened beverages were more likely to die at a young age.

They analyzed data on 1.2 million adults from 14 studies, with some followers for over 20 years.

During this time, 137,310 people died.The risk of death was increased with an additional 250ml sweetened beverage per day, which was 330ml less than a standard pop-can.

Soft drink makers with more than 5g sugar per 100ml have to pay a tax of 18p per liter to the Treasury.

People with more than 8g of sugar per 100ml will be taxed higher than 24p per liter.

Households consume 10% less sugar from soft drinks in the next year, but overall soft drink sales remain unchanged. Experts say buyers switch to low-sugar beverage alternatives or manufacturers adjust to new recipes to avoid paying taxes.

Professor Graham MacGregor from Action on Sugar campaign group said: ‘People should avoid artificial sweetened beverages and choose healthier options like plain water.’

‘Soft drinks are safe to consume as part of a balanced diet,’ says Gavin Partington of the British Soft Drinks Association. The sector recognizes it has a role to play in helping to cope with obesity.
