The Baylor Bears are celebrating their first season championship – defeating previously unbeaten Gonzaga Bulldogs 86-70 Monday night at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.
Gonzaga had to win one more game to complete a perfect season. But it ended with a 31-1 record, not since 1979, the team that lost in the championship game.
Baylor, who made his last appearance in the national championship game 73 years ago, made Gonzaga the lowest total scoring total of the season.
“We, when we want the best, the best has to be,” Baylor coach Scott Drew said after the game. “The better the opponent, the better it will play.”
Baylor relies on the guards for victory. Jared Butler scored 22 points with 7 assists, Devion Mitchell had 15 and 5 assists, while Masiotique had 19.
Gonzaga coach Mark Few said after the game: “It’s really tough to finish the storybook season. But listen, Baylor beat us, they beat us in every aspect of the game and deserve all the credit. ”
Winning is sweet revenge for Baylor. Two years ago, Gonzaga eliminated the bears in the second round. Last year there was no championship because of the coronavirus outbreak.
