Colonial Pipeline has returned all systems to normal operation and delivered millions of gallons of fuel each hour after a ransomware attack forced the company to shut down its network on Friday.
The company said on Saturday that the pipeline served in all markets, including Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, South Georgia and North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, DC, Delaware, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Jersey
However, there is still a widespread fuel shortage in many of those markets. In Washington, the nation̵7;s capital, 80% of gas stations are oil-free, according to the latest data from GasBuddy. In North Carolina, 63% of short stations in Georgia and South Carolina are more than 40%, and in Virginia 38%.
Cyber attacks have forced companies to shut down some 5,500 miles of shipping pipelines and have caused widespread fuel shortages in the Southeast and panic buying in some states.
The colony supplies nearly half of its fuel on the east coast, including gasoline, diesel, heating oil and jet fuel. The colony resumed operations around 5 p.m. ET on Wednesday, but warned that the pipeline would be completely unavailable immediately.
A U.S. official speaking on condition of anonymity told NBC News on Thursday the colony paid nearly $ 5 million in ransom to cybercriminals. It was unclear when the transaction took place.
The Department of Energy is leading the federal government’s response to attacks carried out by the cybercriminal group known as DarkSide, in coordination with the FBI, the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Defense.
Colonial said it would invest in the resources needed to maintain safe and reliable pipeline operations.
“Since this inception, we are clearly focused on restoring a safe and efficient service in our pipeline,” Colonial said in a tweet. “That’s what we have achieved through our commitment. And the dedication of many colonial team members. “
“Our team members work safely and tirelessly at all times to keep our line up and running, and we are grateful for their dedicated service and professionalism during these special moments,” the company said.
