FDA extends recall of Sportmix pet food after 70 dogs were reported to have died.



WASHINGTON (CNN) – The Food and Drug Administration has expanded the recall and alerted pet owners and veterinary experts about the high levels of aflatoxin in their pet foods after 70 dogs were reported to lose. Life and more than 80 people are sick.

The dog food in question was listed as certain Sportmix products made by Midwestern Pet Foods.The company voluntarily recalled the product on Dec. 30, 2020, but Midwestern Pet Foods expanded the recall to include products. They contain corn and are produced in a manufacturing facility in Oklahoma on Tuesday, according to the FDA.

Affected products have an expiration date on or before July 9, 2022, and have “05” on that date or Lot ID.

Aflatoxin is produced by Aspergillus flavus, the FDA says.It can be grown from grains used as an ingredient in pet foods, and when a high consumption of aflatoxin can cause pets to become sick or even die.

Pets exposed to aflatoxin poisoning can show symptoms such as lethargy, jaundice ̵

1; yellowing in the eyes or gums caused by liver damage – anorexia, vomiting, or diarrhea, as the FDA prescribes.

Even if the pet shows no signs of aflatoxin poisoning. In any case, the FDA recommends that owners of pets with pets eating the affected product contact a veterinarian as it can cause long-term liver damage.

While the FDA says there is no evidence that pet owners handling the affected food are at risk for aflatoxin poisoning. But it is recommended that they wash their hands every time after handling pet food.

The following foods added to the original recall are the following, but the FDA says there are more than 1,000 affected lot codes, so they are not listed individually:

Customers can find the lot code on the back of the bag in three lines of code. The following dry pet foods were flagged for the recall on December 30:

Pet owners can report suspected illnesses to the FDA electronically through the Safety Reporting Portal or by calling their state Consumer Complaints Coordinator. The FDA also offers instructions with procedures for reporting pet food complaints.

Investigations are underway and the scope of the recall could be extended as new information becomes available, the FDA said.
