Original article January 14, 2021 (9:26 a.m. ET): Today, both Google and Fitbit officially announced acquisitions in the past. The deal has been in existence for over a year now. Fitbit is owned by Google but is independent of its operation. This is no different from Nest many years after its acquisition in 2014.

Rick Osterloh wrote the announcement of the Google deal in his letter. “Users’ health and wellness data will not be used for Google ads.” He also explained that this is an obligation to make the deal happen, which means it is not a hollow promise.
Likewise, Fitbit CEO and co-founder James Park wrote a similar letter detailing the deal. In his statement, he used the same language as Osterloh to ensure that Google users would not use people’s health data for financial gain.
