HBO Max has updated the Apple TV app while trying to fix a number of issues plaguing its software since last week. The update fixes important issues with basic features like fast forward and rewind. This was introduced after the software switched from using the original tvOS video player. The software update will bring back the original player.
“We just released an update to our Apple TV app, restoring the original tvOS video playback experience you know and love. with more improvements coming soon,” HBO Max said in a tweet. “Maintaining a quality experience for HBO Max viewers is our top priority. And we missed this point.”

Although the worst issue seems to have been fixed, users on the HBOMax subreddit are reporting that some bugs persist after the new update. One user reported that they were searching for their subtitles to revert to Spanish for example. Fortunately, other users have pointed out. The new update makes it easier to change subtitles back. This is a process that makes the previous update much more difficult.
Questions remain about how to distribute such broken software to users in the first place. Responding to tweets from The Verge’s Nilay Panel editor-in-chief, HBO Max’s EVP, and HBO Max’s general manager Andy Forssell agree that this is The “million dollar question,” and the company is investigating the issue.
