Helicopters to vaccinate wildlife against rabies over Cape Cod.

BOURNE Mass – Don’t panic as helicopters fly low over Cape Cod next month.

Starting Monday, helicopters will drop victims of the oral rabies vaccine intended for raccoons and other wildlife in parts of the Barnstable and Plymouth districts, the Cape Cod Times reports.

Distribution of vaccine victims north and west of the Cape Cod Canal will continue through June 4, the Massachusetts and southeastern Massachusetts rabies agency said in a statement.

Approximately 68,000 oral rabies vaccine victims will be distributed.

Using helicopters, the state’s wildlife service can bring prey into areas where vehicles can̵

7;t reach.

This program is designed to increase wildlife rabies vaccination rates and prevent the recurrence of rabies raccoon.

The vaccine was contained in victims whose strong fish smell was unpleasant to people. But it is interesting to note that raccoons were vaccinated against rabies after consuming their victims.

The vaccine is safe for dogs that may have accidentally ingested it, although some dogs may have stomach upset.

Victims not found and consumed within a week will perish.
