Israel, Egypt talk peace with Hamas, rebuild Gaza



Egypt and Israel held high-level negotiations in both countries on Sunday to end fragile fighting between Israel and the Hamas militants and rebuild the Gaza Strip after an 11-day war that struck parts of the border. The sea is sunk in ruins.

Egypt’s Foreign Minister Sameh Shukry received Israeli partner Gabi Ashkenazi in Cairo on Sunday as part of Egypt’s efforts to revive the Mideast peace process and “extend the ceasefire in Gaza. “The Egyptian Foreign Ministry said.

A spokesman for Ahmed Hafez said Shukry called for an atmosphere to begin talks at Again “serious and constructive” between the two. He also urged Israel and Hamas to refrain from “any measures”

; that could hamper efforts to restore peace talks.

The long visit was the first by Israel’s foreign minister to Egypt since 2008, the Israeli embassy in Cairo said. Ministers will discuss topics including the ceasefire and release of Israeli soldiers and Hamas-controlled citizens.

Hamas is capturing the remains of two Israeli soldiers who died in the 2014 war.It also arrested two Israeli civilians who were arrested after entering the Gaza Strip.

As part of the ceasefire, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu hosted a welcoming host of Egyptian intelligence chief Abbas Camel in Jerusalem. Netanyahu said he raised the issue of the return of military and civilian corpses, as well as an Israeli request to prevent Hamas from obtaining force or replacing the resources intended for the civilian population.

One Egyptian official said Camel would meet with Palestinian officials in the West Bank before heading to Gaza to speak with Hamas leader. Intelligence, the Egyptian equivalent of the CIA, often manages Egypt’s ties with Hamas and other Palestinian militants in Gaza.

Egypt’s state-run MENA news agency said Kamel would convey a message from el-Sissi to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, confirming that “Egypt’s full support of the Palestinians”

It said Cairo would host talks between Palestinian groups to achieve unity between those in Gaza and the Israeli occupied area in the West Bank. The report did not provide further details.

During a visit to the region last week, Foreign Minister Antony Blinken said he was trying to bolster Abbas and weaken Hamas as part of a ceasefire effort.

Hamas seized control of Gaza from Abbas forces in 2007, leaving the internationally recognized Palestinian Authority responsible for administering the autonomous region in the Israeli-occupied West Bank. About 40% Hamas, who refuses to recognize Israel’s right of existence, has been branded as a terrorist group by Israel, the United States and other Western countries.

In consultation with Israeli officials, measures that allow electricity and fuel materials to be brought into the territory, as well as a possible expansion of marine areas that allow fishermen in the Gaza Strip.

“The role of the Palestinian Authority is at the center of the negotiations,” he said. “Egypt is trying to get it deeply involved in the rebuilding process.”
