They’ve held the title for nearly 30 years, but Los Angeles residents can no longer claim they have the worst traffic in the country, according to a study on 2020 traffic trends.
A study by the Texas A&M Institute of Transportation ranks the Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim region as the country’s highest-traffic area since 1982, but the 2021 Urban Mobility Report reports that. According to the institute, the New York-Newark region currently has the worst traffic.
The ranking is based on the number of hours the driver is late. The New York-Newark region spent 494,268 hours stuck in traffic last year. while Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim has 365,543 hours of traffic.
Angelenos, though, can no longer claim their traffic is the worst. But they can blame the COVID-19 pandemic by ordering them to stay at home for most of the year. So many California employees work from home.

The drop in traffic also spread across the country. The top 15 cities with the worst traffic in 2020 combined dropped an average of 312,680 to 152,347 total hours.
“Flexible working hours and reliable internet connections allow employees to choose work schedules that benefit their family and job needs,” study co-author David Schrank said in a statement. “And it also reduces the need for road space. Which is helpful for the rest of us.”
New York-Newark also ranked first with the average number of hours drivers spent in traffic last year, with 56 hours. The five areas and the first hours are:

- Boston 50
- Houston, 49 years
- Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim, 46 years
- San Francisco-Oakland, 46 years
Even though traffic across the country has dropped to its lowest level in the past 30 years, that’s not expected. by September Traffic conditions began to increase. And now California is fully reopening. Los Angeles may regain the crown.
