Massive wildfires were burning Sunday night in the Bass River State Forest area, east of Garden State Parkway, south of Ocean and Burlington.
The New Jersey Forest Fire Service said fire fighters were working to control about 70 acres of the blaze that burned west of Otisbox Road and south of Stage Road in Little Exhar. number
Firefighters will take a burnout course, setting up less controlled fires in hopes of protecting buildings and homes on Stage Road and offshore mansion developments along Route 9, firefighters said. About 100 structures are at risk.
Route 9 is closed in the area, firefighters will be on site all night and everyone in the area should be advised that fumes will spread while firefighters work, the fire department said.
The evacuation in the area is voluntary and Pinelands Middle School is a designated shelter for those seeking to leave the home, the service said.
The fire started at about 4.00 p.m. from the Fire Department’s Bass River Fire tower. No injuries have been reported.
