Contract drugmaker Catalent Inc. is expanding U.S. production of the Covid-19 vaccine from Moderna Inc., a development that could ensure the U.S. has ample supply due to increased vaccinations.
Catalent has reached a deal with Moderna to speed up vaccine production at the contract maker Bloomington, Ind., Planted this month to around 400 bottles per minute, according to people familiar with the matter.
Catalent will shift its shot production into a faster line from two slower lines. People said the new volumes will be ready for delivery next month and the upgraded factory will be able to fill 80 million more bottles annually.
The expansion will help Moderna reach its goal of supplying an additional 100 million doses to the United States by the end of May and another 100 million doses by the end of July.
Production of many licensed vaccines in the United States has increased dramatically in recent weeks as manufacturers have expanded production lines and take other steps to increase output.
