COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (AP) – Police in Sri Lanka on Thursday arrested Crown Prince for having the crown removed from the head of the Miss Sri Lanka pageant winner and allegedly made it. Injured She was later bailed out.
Caroline Jurie, Miss World 2020 winner, is accused of assaulting Pushpika Desilva, Mississippi title winner, in a televised contest held in Colombo on Sunday.
Moments after De Silva was crowned, Sri Lankan Jurie came on stage and took the crown from her, saying she was ineligible because she was divorced. Jurie then gave the crown to the first runner-up, announcing that she was the winner.
In a statement on her Facebook page, De Silva declined to divorce.
“Being apart is one thing. Divorce is something else. I̵7;m still a woman who hasn’t been divorced, ”she wrote.
Police spokesman Ajith Rohana said police received a complaint from De Silva that she was injured when the crown was removed.
Rohana said Jurie and model Chula Pad Mendra were arrested on Thursday on suspicion. “Assault and criminal enforcement” and subsequently received bail. Both women were ordered to appear in court on April 19.
Jurie declined to comment as she exited the police station.
The events that took place at Sunday’s pageant in which the wife of the Prime Minister took part in the Indian Ocean archipelago caused massive chaos. On Monday, the organizers of the pageant said they would return the crown to De Silva.
