Neuralink President Max Hodak announced Saturday via Twitter that he is no longer in the health technology venture he co-founded with Elon Musk and has not been around for a few weeks. He did not disclose the circumstances of his departure.
Neuralink, based in Fremont, Calif. Is “Developing an ultra-high-bandwidth brain-machine interface to connect humans and computers,”; according to the company description on LinkedIn.
Musk, CEO of electric car maker Tesla and space defense contractor SpaceX, has said that without providing evidence that Neuralink’s devices could be enabled. “Superhuman awareness” allows paralyzed people to operate smartphones or robotic limbs. Someday the mind and “cure” autism and schizophrenia.
Neuralink was founded in 2016, with Musk investing tens of millions of dollars in personal wealth.Neuralink is also developing a surgical robot to implant the device using tiny wires about a quarter the diameter of a human hair to connect the implants. With the brain
Musk explained that the surgery to insert the Neuralink device took less than an hour.
After a demonstration in August of 2020, the MIT Technology Review considered Neuralink a “neuroscience theater” in its terrifying presentation.
Musk had no background in neuroscience or medical devices. But according to the project director Neuralink cited by The New York Times in 2019, it was “keen on trying to help solve the engineering problems that Neuralink faced.”
In the medical news website StatNews, neurologist and physician Anna Wexler wrote in an op-ed on April 7, 2021:
In this new world of private neurodevelopment, the company’s demonstration is broadcast live on YouTube and has a taste of techno optimism related to announcements about the future that we haven’t seen yet – But one thing we can be sure will happen with the data. The idioms about making the world a better place are heavy. “
The next day, Musk wrote another tweet, without evidence:
“The first @Neuralink product will help paralyzed people use their smartphones faster than people using their thumbs.
“Later versions can divert signals from brain Neuralinks to Neuralinks in the body / sensory motor neuron cluster, allowing for example paraplegics to walk again.
The skull implant and charges wirelessly so you look and feel totally normal. ”
On Saturday, Hodak was not immediately available to comment.
For Musk, Saturday is undoubtedly a day of more focus on his SpaceX ventures. After 167 days in space, the astronauts on the SpaceX and NASA mission began flying home, expecting a “splash” around 2:57 a.m.
One Hodak follower on Twitter asked him what’s next, and he replied, “It’s not Jurassic Park.” “We could have built a Jurassic Park if we wanted to, it wouldn’t be a real dinosaur genetically. But maybe 15 years of breeding + engineering get a novel, exotic strain. “
Neuralink is one of several medical technology companies working on so-called “Brain Machine Interface”
Competitors include developing implants and non-invasive devices such as headsets, among them Kernel, Synchron, Neurable and even Facebook in the United States, CereGate in Germany and Mindmaze in Switzerland.
