Firefighters suspended controlled incineration to help control the flames and save at least 100 homes at risk along Stage 9 and Road.
First encountered around 4 o’clock on Sunday.
Rob Gill, of the New Jersey Forest Fire, told Action News the fire had occupied about 900 acres divided between Ocean and Burlington counties.
Gill said the lights had zero percent in them.
Part of Route 9 was forced to shut down. There is a voluntary evacuation for local residents, with a shelter set up at Pinelands Regional High School.
Chopper 6 was overhead on Sunday night as firefighters from across the state worked to keep the flames under control.
Authorities reported on 70 firefighters with New Jersey forest fire brigades from central and southern states fighting to keep the fire under control. About 150 structural firefighters from 39 municipal fire brigades work to protect the surrounding houses.
Gill said the fire happened at the backend of the fire season.
“It varies depending on the land where the fire is possible,” he said. “It varies from acre to large fires like this one. It all depends on the land, fuel type, terrain. There are many factors. As it determines the size of the fire “

Firefighters embarked on what they called They set up smaller and controlled fires in hopes of protecting homes along Stage Road and the offshore mansion development along Route 9 in Little Egg Harbor.
“It’s the process by which we get rid of the forest fuel on the ground from the safe zone. In this situation, it’s a hard road along the way the fire was going,” Gill said.
Asking residents to avoid the area
No injuries have been reported. The cause of the fire is still being investigated.
