That might spell the doom when it comes to seeing Marvel vs.Capcom 4 if it’s true.
Rumors started circulating last week that NetherRealm Studios’ next fighting game will not be in their DC Injustice universe, but one for the other big comic book and superhero entertainment juggernaut ̵1; Marvel.
Right now, Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon appears to be blowing in the fire of these speculations about the potential of the Marvel x NetherRealm video game project.
“Wow. [James Gunn] Has managed to work on some impressive DC and MARVEL films 🤔 ”wrote Boon on Twitter in response to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which received a 2023 release date.
This is important as Gunn directed and wrote The Suicide Squad, making him one of the few people on the planet to have the opportunity to work on both Marvel and DC projects.
Wow. @ JamesGunn was able to work on awesome DC and MARVEL movies 🤔 https://t.co/A4Yk437MuM

Boon’s tweet was a quote and an emoji of thought at the end could easily be interpreted that he could join that club as well.
Rumors about the name of NetherRealm were sparked by industry insider / insider Daniel Richtman, who stated that the developer’s next game is already in production and will be a Marvel fighting game for the next generation of consoles, according to reports. Of Stealth Optional
Considering Mortal Kombat 11 launched two years ago, NRS is almost certainly working on the next project, although developers overall have been relatively quiet since Ultimate release in November 2020.
Bun previously said he had at least talked to Marvel about making a fighting game, but he “probably shouldn’t have talked about it”.
“We love making Marvel or Marvel vs. DC fighting games,” Boon said in an interview with Game Informer in 2019. “I think it will be the coolest.”
One of the big hurdles that NRS Marvel games can face is the fact that the studio is owned by Warner Bros., which, of course, has the rights to DC Comics.
“We like to make it like a Marvel fighting game or Marvel vs. DC, I think it’s the coolest.”
It’s unclear how much Disney is willing to play ball against one of the big competitors in the entertainment industry. But deals like this will drop from time to time.
After the bad and fast-paced abandonment of Marvel vs.Capcom: Infinite, it made sense that Disney would seek a similarly-shaped developer with a proven track record of producing hits to work on a fighting game that. Have further potential
NetherRealm’s ability to create an expansive and impressive story mode in movies is likely to be the biggest selling point for Disney and Marvel as well.
However, if these rumors become true, however, the existence of the NetherRealm x Marvel game could spell doom for the future Marvel vs Capcom project for years to come.
While there have been signs of a recent contract that the two companies are reuniting to launch the MvC and Marvel Arcade 1Up kiosk, it’s hard to imagine lighting competing products anywhere close to each other.
It is important to remember that these “leaks” are still in the realm of rumors, so this information should be taken with a large grain of salt.
On top of that, Ed Boon is known for trolling and messing with his fans online, so he might enjoy speculation or try to drums to make Marvel fighting games a reality in the future.
NetherRealm’s history is full of rumors and hidden secrets, dating back to the original Mortal Kombat and the Midway era, so it all happened in their alley for sure.
For now, all we can do is wait and see what Boon’s team is doing for us next.
