Authorities said the body of a 15-year-old daughter of an anti-violence activist in New Jersey was found in a wooded area in South Carolina on Thursday.
Sanaa Amenhotep, daughter of Sharif Malik Amenhotep, a member of Newark’s Brick City Peace Collective, was discovered in Lexington County after nearly three weeks of searching, officials said.
Amenhotep announced the death of her daughter in a Facebook post.
“My first heir, Sanaa Mahari Amenhotep, I can’t believe she left us. You broke the heart of the whole family through pain. I will never be the same,” he wrote.

A 17-year-old man has been arrested and charged with kidnapping and officials are looking for Treveon Jamar Nelson, who is expected to be charged the same.
Richland County Sheriff Leon Lotte said Amenhote had been missing since April 5 after leaving her home in Columbia, South Carolina, she left with two men. It “may be voluntary” before it becomes a kidnapping, he said.
“I told my parents we were going to bring her home and we did that,” Lott told reporters. “Unfortunately, we didn’t bring her home the way we all prayed and wished we could.”
The sheriff called for Nelson to turn back, saying “He cannot run and hide.”
“We need him,” he said. “He has to be arrested and arrested quickly.”

In a statement, Newark Mayor Ras Baraga expressed his condolences.
“On behalf of the residents of Newark, I offer my deepest condolences to Sharif Malikamenhote for the tragic loss of his beautiful and intelligent black daughter Sana Amenhote, who was kidnapped. “No parent should have had to bury their child. It’s an inexplicable loss that defies the imagination.”
