Tesla has come a step closer to launching in India later this year by registering a local company, according to a regulatory filing Tuesday.
Tesla Motors India and Energy Private Limited were established on January 8 with a registered office in the southern city of Bengaluru, the hub of a number of global technology companies.
The documents show that the Indian agency has three directors, including David Feinstein, who is currently Tesla̵7;s chief executive, according to his LinkedIn profile.
India’s Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari told a local newspaper in December that the U.S. electric vehicle maker would start with sales, then could consider assembly and production.
Tesla chief executive Elon Musk has tweeted several times in the past few years, including as recently as October 2020 about the impending attack on India.
The move comes as India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi is promoting the production and use of electric vehicles to reduce the country’s dependence on oil and reduce pollution.
But efforts have been hindered by a lack of investment in manufacturing and infrastructure such as charging stations.
To boost investment, India plans to offer a $ 4.6 billion incentive to companies setting up advanced battery plants, according to a government proposal seen by Reuters.
