The Apple Watch may receive the ability to measure blood pressure, blood sugar and blood alcohol levels, according to new information released on Apple’s selected business partners.

Rockley Photonics has developed a non-invasive optical sensor for detecting a number of blood-related health indicators, including blood pressure, blood sugar and blood alcohol levels, many of which can usually be detected with medical devices. Specifically, the more invasive Rockley sensors emit infrared light through the user’s skin, just like the sensors built into the back of the Apple Watch to detect heart rate and blood oxygen levels.
Rockley’s revelation that its biggest customer is Apple comes as the company prepares to go public in New York. The company’s filing indicates that Apple accounted for the majority of its revenues over the past two years and has On an ongoing “supply and development deal” with the company, it is expected to continue to rely heavily on Apple for most of its revenue.
Given the growth of Rockley Photonics and the scale of Apple’s partnership with the company, it seems inevitable that the company’s health sensor technology will arrive at the Apple Watch sooner than later.
The company has set up offices in San Jose, in addition to facilities in Oxford, Cardiff, Cork and Helsinki, Rockley said the next generation of sensors could be in smartwatches for consumer and other consumer electronics in the year.
