Police said Thursday that the Sri Lankan beauty queen who was involved in the crown hijacking was arrested in the wake of the stage brawl, police said on Thursday.
Reigning “Mrs. World” Caroline Jurie was arrested for “assault and crime. In connection with the chaos on Sunday night at a pageant in Colombo, the BBC reported.
Jurie, who hails from Sri Lanka, got into chaos when she jumped onstage as they crowned “Mrs. Sri Lanka”, the shop’s Pushpica decilva winner reported.
She pulled the crown from De Silva’s head, claiming that she was actually divorced and was disqualified from her tenure.
“There are rules that prevent married and divorced women, so I am working to get the crown to the second place,”; Jurie told the crowd.
Jurie wore the crown instead of the runner-up, causing tears and noise on stage.
Silva had to be hospitalized for treatment for head injuries following the floods, the BBC reported.
She later told reporters that she would take legal action for the way in which she was treated the way. “Irrational and disrespectful,” the BBC reported.
Police confirmed on Thursday they had arrested Jurie and another rival in connection with the brawl.
“Police arrested Caroline Jurie and model Chula Pad Mendra in Sunday’s incident for assault and crime,” police spokesman Ajith Rohana told the BBC.
The organizers of the contest were crowned De Silva once again and apologized for the incident.
“We are disappointed. It is humiliating how Caroline Jurie behaves on stage and the Mrs. World organization has begun an investigation into the matter,” the organizers told the outlet.
