The UK strain is now the dominant coronavirus strain in the United States, Walensky said.

“Based on our latest estimates from the CDC surveillance, the B.1.1.7 variant is now the most common pedigree circulating in the United States,” Walensky said in a briefing of the White House’s COVID-19 response team.

Studies suggest that the UK breed is more contagious than the original, potentially more dangerous and at higher risk of death.

There are currently 16,275 confirmed patients of the B.1.1.7 variant in the United States, according to the CDC.

The daily rate of the nation’s new patients has increased almost over the past four weeks. This was in part due to the spread of B.1.1.7 and other related variables, Walensky said this week.
Last month, there was growing evidence that the variable was already dominant in the United States at the time, the CDC declined to say whether the variable was dominant. But it’s predicted to be within weeks
