Updating the Apple Watch Series 3 is a nightmare in 2021.

Apple Watch Series 3 was first released in September 2017 with performance improvements and a faster processor. Almost four years later in 2021, Apple is still selling the Series 3 as the entry-level Apple Watch, starting at $ 199, a savings of $ 80 over the latest Apple Watch SE, as I learned recently. “Still selling” and “support in a reasonable way” are two very different things, and the 2021 update to the Apple Watch Series 3 is a nightmare of the technological chaos to pass.

Updating Apple Watch is usually a time consuming process. But it’s annoyingly straightforward: You charge your watch up to 50 percent, plug it in, and wait for slower transfer and install updates on your smartwatch.

But the non-cellular Apple Watch Series 3 has a small 8GB of internal storage, which is a bit more than adequate by the operating system and other important software, thus installing major updates like the recently released watchOS 7.4. It will be as follows:

  1. Unpair and wipe your Apple Watch to factory settings.
  2. Set up your Apple Watch again and restore from a backup.
  3. Realize that you should not yet restore from your backup.
  4. Watch an episode or two Brooklyn Nine-Nine While you wait for the backup to complete
  5. Let̵
7;s start from step one again – but it’s a brand new Apple Watch without restoring from an existing backup.
  6. All new Apple Watch updates now have enough free memory to update.
  7. Consider how much you want to use this face unlock feature.
  8. Unpair and wipe Apple Watch for the third time.
  9. Restore from your backup and use it normally normally.

And it seems that the problem will have an effect whether you have multiple apps installed or not. Apple’s support site doesn’t bother Series 3 owners in trying to clear up space – they just encourage them to head straight to the aforementioned reset cycle.

It is clear that the current process cannot be prevented.

I am an editor of a tech news website and willing to put my time and energy into tackling it, which is as disappointing as it may be. But if you’re the more casual user who is the same person who tends to own the old and outdated timepieces in the first place, why bother with the worst update mechanism? GE’s to reset smart bulbs. And being able to update your hardware software is important, like the recently released watchOS 7.4.1, for example, it fixes a critical security flaw. But with this extremely difficult setup, there’s a good chance many Series 3 owners won’t bother.

I know Apple likes to claim support for as much of its older hardware as it can with each new update. It’s one of the most appealing Apple products when it comes to speed of updates on rival Android phones (like the recently discontinued Galaxy S8).

But the miserable update process for the Series 3 is a strong argument that Apple is too generous with what it considers to be the “current” hardware. Old inventory and take advantage of a long-broken maturity process, even attracting users who really Can’t afford the extra $ 80 for the significantly better Apple Watch SE. It’s a similar trend with the still inexplicable Apple TV HD that is almost six years old and costs just $ 30 less than the brand new 4K (like the Series 3), don’t buy the new Apple TV HD in a year. 2021 as well)

But hopefully, with the announcement of watchOS 8 almost imminent at WWDC this June, the company will take into account the underlying hardware functionality when it comes to what it does and doesn’t support, as if Apple insists on selling older products. In the future, more care will be taken to deal with software support.
