Watch NASA drop a test spaceship into a million gallon pool.

Test version of NASA Orion’s lunar mission crew capsule awaits for poking on April 6.

NASA’s Artemis program aims to bring astronauts back to the moon for the first time since the Apollo era. The agency has been successful. Firing part of the massive SLS rocket system. Last month. On Tuesday, NASA dropped a test version of the Orion spacecraft into a really big pool of water.

NASA TV broadcasts water droplets that delight the water. The test seemed to go well, with the capsule behaving as expected.

The 14,000-pound (6,350 kg) Orion model mimics a plane that will fly through space for future crewed Artemis missions. The capsule was loaded into a million gallons (3.8 million liters) of water known as the Hydro Impact Basin after being released from a height of 7 feet (2 meters).

“The test data will help engineers better understand what Orion and crew may experience when landing in the Pacific,” NASA said in a March statement.

The space agency is planning further tests, including a more drop test and a test that will involve hurling the Orion into the water from an angle.

NASA is eyeing the ambitious 2024 date for returning astronauts to the moon through the Artemis program.

Before putting a shoe on the lunar surface, NASA plans to launch the unused Artemis I mission early this year, and then complete the lunar crewed Artemis II mission in early 2022. It’s the first chance for humans to experience the splash in the ocean in the Orion capsule.
